Location of Bermuda

Bermuda is located off the east coast of the United States, in the Atlantic Ocean, well north of the Caribbean. Flight time from New York is only 1 hour 50 minutes.

Traveller’s Information
Bermuda is an English-speaking, British territory. A passport and return ticket is generally all that is required to enter Bermuda for a short vacation. (Prior to 2007 US citizens did not require passports to re-enter the USA. You will now!) The US dollar is exactly equivalent in value to the Bermuda dollar, and is accepted everywhere in Bermuda.

Climate
Average monthly temperatures in Bermuda range from 67 F (19 C) in February to 87 F (31 C) in August. The best weather for the beach and watersports is between April and October. On the other hand, the mild “winters” are ideal for land-based activities such as golf, tennis, walking, running, cycling etc. There is no rainy season.

Geography
Bermuda is a small, hilly limestone island with lush, sub-tropical vegetation. It is 15 miles (25 km) long and less than 1.5 miles (2 km) wide. Travel time from one end of the island to the other is about 1 hour. The capital, Hamilton, is in the middle of the island, from which the airport is about 1/2 hour away, at the eastern end.

Transportation
Bermuda has a very efficient, clean and reliable public transportation system. Cash is not accepted. Tokens, 1-day, 3-day or 7-day passes are available. These are honoured on both buses and ferries. As there are no rental cars, the only aternatives to public transport are taxis and rental motor scooters. The latter are popular with tourists who seem to cope well in the relatively slow moving traffic.

Beaches
The coastal cliffs and rocky headlands of Bermuda are interspersed with magnificent beaches and sheltered sandy coves. In place of the hotel strips, busy promenades and amusement arcades, which are commonly found associated with beaches, you will find sand dunes, tropical vegetation and picturesque rocky outcrops. Bermuda has a beach for everyone; whether it be the majestic Horseshoe Bay, the peaceful charm of John Smiths Bay or the snorkeller’s paradise at Tobacco Bay. Nowhere in the world is there such a variety and density of splendid, safe and unspoilt beaches….not to mention the famous pink hue.

Fishing
Bermuda is a superb venue for salt water sports fishing. World records have been set in a dozen species ranging from Blue Marlin to Blackfin Tuna. The season kicks off with the best Yellowfin Tuna fishing anywhere, in May. June through August bring on the calm seas and big fish including: Blue Marlin, Bonita, Rainbow Runner and Amberjack. While September through December is Wahoo time!

Golf
With eight golf courses in such a small island-nation, you will never have far to travel to your next tee off. World class designers, such as Robert Trent Jones, have seen to it that these scenic coastal courses are both challenging and inspiring. The fairways are in best condition between November and March when the climate is perfect for those who prefer the heat turned down… but not too much.
